Built as a slaughterhouse in 1886, the Steel City building was converted into apartments in the early 1900s, but had fallen into disrepair. The vital need for renovation made a major impact on a declining neighborhood. This transformation was rebuilt under guidelines of PA Historical and Museum Commission and it included the uncovering of high ceilings and the restoration of the center stairs. This project also included the newly constructed Chestnut Towers which houses 34 apartments, a community room and offices with support space. |
